PD Dr. med. Lohmann
Managing Director
Education and career
PD Dr. Rüdiger Lohmann is the CEO and founder of Lohmann & Birkner Health Care Consulting GmbH in Berlin, Germany. After studying medicine at Hannover Medical School as well as the University of Washington, Seattle, USA, he completed his assistant doctor in the department of general, visceral and transplantation surgery at the Charité in Berlin (Prof. Dr. Peter Neuhaus). He interrupted his employment there for a period, during which he conducted a two-year research stay in the United States (Massachusetts Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston). After obtaining his specialist in surgery along with an additional diploma in medical informatics, he worked in the field of software development and consulting for various companies in Germany.
Dr. Lohmann founded Lohmann & Birkner Health Care Consulting GmbH together with Dr. Katharina Birkner in a time period that can be characterised by the collapse of the so-called “new market” in fall 2001. The objective was in the first place to provide support to the service providers with the implementation of the newly introduced patient accounting system in Germany (DRG). The customer base, however, was expanded quite quickly to cost carriers, specialist companies and the industry. In order to be able to serve these markets and to meet the challenges of developments in the area of health care and information technology, further subsidiary companies have been established in the following years.
Many of Dr. Lohmanns publications and book contributions address topics such as transplant medicine, liver and bile duct surgery and the metabolism of liver cells. Furthermore, he elaborates on quality- and process management as well as on the current health policy development with the DRG-system. A further part of his work is the design of databases and medical software for hospitals and health insurances as well as the development of care management programs.
Since 2014, Dr. Lohmann also works as head of the working group on health economics and information technology at the surgical department of the Charité in Berlin (Prof. Dr. Johann Pratschke). In 2016 he took over this position in the Center for Musculoskeletal Medicine of the Charité, too (Prof. Dr. Michael Schütz and Prof. Dr. Carsten Perka). Moreover, Dr. Lohmann volunteered as a doctor for Interplast in Nepal and works there usually once a year at the Sushma Koirala Memorial Hospital, Sankhu/ Kathmandu. In addition, he is member of the Board of the John Hopkins ACG System Advisory Board in Baltimore, USA and member of the foundation board of Will Foundation, Berlin.
